Hooking Up
  • Bars--we've got lots to choose from. You'll find most in the Castro, South of Market (SOMA), The Polk and The Mission. Keep your eyes and ears open for special events like beer busts (The Eagle on Sundays), trivia nights (Harvey's on Mondays), and salsa dancing (El Rio and Lalo's).
  • Sex Clubs--for sex without the long-term commitment (more than 20-30 minutes). Each is different, with its own personality. Eros has saunas and massage; Mack Folsom Prison is one big room; Blow Buddies delivers on its promise; and SF Citadel, a leather play space. For a real outing (and lockable doors!), try Steamworks in Berkeley or The Watergarden in San Jose.
  • Cruise Spots--they're everywhere, from outside Starbucks in the Castro, to the Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), to the forests of Buena Vista Park, to the last car on any BART train (OK, this one may be an urban myth). The truth of the matter is, the entire city of San Francisco is a cruise spot.
  • The Internet, chat rooms, phone sex lines and newspaper personals make for quick pick-ups, without leaving your home. Once you decide to meet, keep an open mind, but have a Plan B--just in case things don't work out, for whatever reason(s).
And remember, however you choose to hook up, keep your personal safety and sexual health in mind.
