New Boy In Town
(Fresh Meat...mm, mmm)
Plop...you're in the Land of Oz. To go along with those ruby slippers you'll need the basics (apartment, job, food, transportation, information), things to do to entertain yourself, and find the man of your (wet) dreams!
Basics of Life
  • You can look for a cool pad through rental agencies (Metro-Rent on Fillmore), or Craigslist. Don't forget to check out bulletin boards in laundromats and cafes.
  • It ain't cheap living in Oz, so take off those rose-colored glasses, put on that "three-piece suit" and find a job. Check out Craigslist. (for everything). Don't forget, networking can be the best way to find a job.
  • Safeway and Cala supermarkets for the traditional urban carnivore; Buffalo Foods, Harvest Market or Rainbow Grocery for the "homo-organic-sapien."
  • Getting around is easy. MUNI (for SF travel), BART, CalTrain, and the Ferries for extended trips, or just walk to exercise those glutes.
  • Papers for community events, personals and the latest gossip: B.A.R. (every Thursday); Gloss and Odyssey for club news (every other week); Bay Times; and Spectrum. And the SF Weekly and The Guardian are also good, for straight rags.
Entertainment
  • A bar is a bar from one town to the next, but the neighborhood where you'll find them...ah, now there's the rub. Castro for a bit of everything; South of Market (SOMA) for the levis-leather or dance club set; and The Polk for some of the City's oldest bars.
  • For movies or films (for those with a more refined palate), may we suggest: The Castro Theatre for an eclectic array of films in a movie palace to die for; AMC 1000, Kabuki 8, and Metreon for the megaplex inclined.
  • Check out each neighborhood and discover its treasures. The Mission has murals, The Haight is all funky and cool, and The Castro has wall-to-wall men! So many great neighborhoods to explore, but here's a tip: take public transportation (MUNI or BART) and skip parking and tickets.
  • For some green space, check out Golden Gate Park, the largest urban park in the country! Biking, skating, hiking, a classic carousel, paddleboats on Stow Lake, half naked men!
Meeting People
  • Sports and dance groups offer another form of body contact. Tsunamis for aquatics, FrontRunners for runners, SF Spokes for bike riders, and same-sex dance classes at the Metronome, to start. Whether you swim, run, salsa, swing or anything else, there's bound to be a group for you. If you can't find one, why not start one of your own?
  • When prayer isn't enough: Most Holy Redeemer and MCC in the Castro, Glide Memorial (it's Methodist, but all are welcome) and , to name a few. Find the one that fits your groove.
  • Volunteering is a great way to network, meet new friends, find a job and maybe your next date. The Volunteer Center can hook you up with the right place, or pick an agency and introduce yourself.
