Throughout February;
Artists Reception on Friday, February 5th, 8:00-10:00pm
The Soul Bearers - Artwork of Matt Pipes
Throughout February Magnet will be showcase works of Matt Pipes in The Soul Bearers. The inspiration for the series came from an online art project sponsored by Visual Aid called Afterlife, in which artists were asked to present their views on death and dying. Matt chose the Raven because it is a symbol of shamanism and considered to be the carrier of the soul in many cultures. As he began working on the imagery he began to see the Raven as a metaphor for transformation in his own life, as well as an agent for dealing with loss.
In the series the Raven becomes the object of desire to a male figure who is trying desperately to become whole by becoming one with the Raven. During the process he experiences desire, loss, and yearning and eventually finds calm, peace and serenity as he and the Raven merge.
The series are all painted in semi opaque and iridescent washes within many layers of clear acrylic resin and are meant to change as the light changes. Each piece is a meditative object to Matt, and he hopes that is how they are experienced by others as well.
Join us at the Opening Reception on Friday February 5th from 8:00-10:00pm. For info on Matt Pipes check out www.mattpipes.com
